Biography
Over the past decades I’ve been toiling in the field of communication counseling, much of it related to guiding organizational response to change. Since the turn of the century I've worked freelance, including an extended period helping IBM produce articles and backgrounders targeted to mass media.

From 1997 to 1999 (as long as I could tolerate the bureaucracy and it could tolerate me), I was a principal and head of marketing publications for William M. Mercer, Incorporated, an international human resource consulting firm. From 1991 to 1997 I counseled organizations on developing and executing long-term communication strategies during times of external transformation and/or internal restructuring. I also assisted unionized organizations in developing cooperative working relationships within the collective-bargaining framework, training labor-management teams to recognize and develop communications as an essential element in a new, non-adversarial organizational culture.

From 1978 to 1991 I was with Hill and Knowlton, a public relations/public affairs firm. I wound up a senior vice president, director of the Communications Task Force (the company’s hotshot writing group), and a creative/strategic director in the New York and Washington, D.C., offices. Two mergers and rapacious new management scotched that cushy deal the first time I called the new management “rapacious.” Prior to that I was an associate editor at Library Journal magazine, and worked in film distribution and exhibition for a production company and a repertory cinema chain.

I have a BA in literature, philosophy, and psychology from New York University. I’ve served on the Communications Committee of Healthy Companies, a Washington-based organizational research and consulting firm. I’ve been a member of the board of trustees of Jennifer Muller and The Works, a New York-based dance company, and have served as a consultant to the Arts and Business Council, the American Film Institute, the Negro Ensemble Company, the Roundabout Theatre Company, and the Management Decision Laboratory at New York University's Graduate School of Business Administration. I’ve also been a book reviewer for Saturday Review and Library Journal magazines and a member of the National Book Critics Circle.

I’m divorced; no children. My interests include astronomy and star-gazing, bicycling, bird watching, and bridge. Ballroom dancing inevitably must follow.
