Well, I tried to give back, Mr. Berry. Here is what happened:
BTW, I'm a '62 graduate.
After leaving HP I spent most of my adult life working for the USG in Germany. Being a member of the class (5th from the scholastic bottom) I felt it an obligation or duty to - as you say - give back.
I e-mailed an invitation to the then current principal offering room and board in my home to any Black student studying German. I also asked for an opportunity to speak to a graduating class at a future date. I wanted to talk about my personal and professional success to students in the bottom strata of their class.
I grew up to be an award-winning video producer (documented) and wanted to tell them, in essence, never quit.
Well, to date, there has been no reply.
I was crushed. It was a bitter reminder that even offering gifts to some is a waste of time. Now then, I support your efforts to inspire HP grads to give back. I tried and failed. Perhaps the qualifying criteria is to be in the city? I will never know.
I wish you success in your challenge to motivate past HP graduates to "Give Back" Good luck!
